Are we alone in the universe?

Are we alone in the universe is one of the questions that science has been trying to answer for a long time.
There are two ways that this could be resolved. Either we could find life elsewhere ourselves: this is what searches such as SETI are trying to do and also with our solar system exploration and other methods of detection we are looking for signs of life elsewhere in the cosmos.
The second option is that alien life actively finds us - for instance if a spaceship from a foreign planet suddenly turns up hovering above London in a Dr Who type manner then it is pretty certain that alien life exists!
