Avocados

Yesterday I ate a perfect avocado. Well, almost perfect. I removed the stone, but to my surprise found within the flesh another nine small pips - almost as big as cherry pips, two of which were embedded into the inside of the skin. I must have eaten at least a hundred avocados in my life but have never come accross one with these small pips before. Does anybody know what they are and what they are doing there? Red
