There are seven or so characteristics of life.
If you think about the things that you do then you are almost there.
For instance you are capable of movement as opposed to a stone that does not move.
You can reproduce, at least as a species when old enough, which a rock can't do.
You also respire or use up energy.
You are able to respond to the environment around you in the way that a rock can't, it just gets moved by wind and animals and things like that.
So those are characteristics of life.
The term element refers to the most basic sections of a chemical like helium or hydrogen, these are elements then water is a compound of elements such as hydrogen and oxygen, so they are the most basic chemical building blocks.
