Can congealed blood (around a surgery wound) result in blood clots?

I have extensive (diagnosed) blood congealment around a six day-old surgical incision. The resultant swelling is causing considerable discomfort. I am wondering if blood congealment can cause a blood clot(s)?

Check with your doctor to find out the answer to this one, sounds important so I wouldn't trust the accurate information to a website answer!
