Can you plant flowers around pine trees? If so are there ones that do better than others?

Yes you can plant flowers around them though ensure that they are far enough away from the base that they get light and will be able to get some nutrients without getting overpowered by the pine tree.
Look in the wild at flowers and plants that naturally grow around pines for inspiration as for what sort of thing to grow. I wouldn't get concerned about pine cones falling on them.
