Do free newspaper websites cannibalise their own market?

Yes there seems to be little doubt that if you can get content paid for in the shop or free online then there is no reason to buy it!
The other big problem with all the free content on newspaper sites is that even if they each offer just a percentage of their content by browsing around you can pick up the other stories from the different websites.
So there is no reason to pay for the newspaper version. Plus journalists are increasingly lazy and take their stories from press releases or other sources anyway so the quality of the writing is no better generally than what you get for free online.
