The US president is elected for a four year term. He can,if elected, serve two terms, that's eight years. It is possible for a US president to serve a maximum of ten years. If he was Vice President, and the serving president died in office or retired through ill health, or was otherwise removed from office, as Vice President he could serve the last two years of that administration plus two elected terms of his own, making ten years in all.
