How can businesses make money through facebook?

Businesses make money through facebook by advertising on there and then hoping that they get a return on their investment.
I suppose another option is indirect sales.
By that I mean that if they start a page where people can be their friends and maybe a group then they could use that to drive awareness like free marketing and therefore in the future when people go to buy a product they are more likely to think of that brand.
