How can I avoid DVT when flying?

Question asked by: knowitall

There are sensible things you can do when flying to reduce the risk of DVT.

One of the key things is to stay hydrated through the flight therefore have plenty of water and try to avoid things like alcohol as this can make you dehydrated.

The other important element is that you should move around often during the flight. Thus don't just sit still but walk around every hour or so, and stretch your legs.

There are also simple exercises that you can do in your chair for instance moving and rotating legs, feet and arms at regular intervals. These things help to keep the blood circulating and therefore help reduce the chance of problems with DVT developing.
