How can I clean tarnished gold?
Question asked by: knowitall

It is very hard to clean tarnished gold because of course gold doesn't tarnish. Rather it will be the base metal under the thin layer of gold that has tarnished.
What you should do therefore instead is get the item re-plated with gold by a plating shop.
It might cost a little bit of money but it is the only effective method.

Gold does tarnish, even if it is 14 or 18 carat. Make a solution of mostly water to which ammonia and dawn dishwasher liquid has been added. Let sit for a while and then rinse. Or if very discolored, take to a reputable jeweler and have them clean it.
