How can I solve a word ladder puzzle?

Solving a word ladder puzzle can be difficult, if there is only one or few combinations to move from the first to the last word.

One handy tip is rather than start at the top like most people to rather start at the bottom and then work your way up the puzzle - this can often help, and if you can get a word from the bottom and one from the top this can reduce the size of the ladder and make it easier to solve.
