The key to telling how much a penny red is worth is to find the plate number.
This is a small number that appears in the margin of the stamp - some numbers were created in great quantities and survive as such, whilst others are much rarer.
By checking the plate number against a catalogue such as Stanley Gibbons you can see how much the stamp is worth. They can vary in price from a few pounds only for the common ones right up to hundreds for a very rare plate number.
