How did sailors measure longitude and latitude 100 years ago?

The answer to this question can be summed up in one word - the first sat nav device, called a sextant.
This clever device (the sextant) measured the angle created by the noon sun, the ship, and the visible horizon: as a result of this information therefore the sailor would know his exact position and thus would be able to adjust the course as necessary and check on progress.
Simple but very effective device...
