How did the USA obtain Louisana?

Interesting question. Louisiana became a state in 1812 and as such was one of the earlier joiners at state 18 of the USA.
The territory was sold to the United States by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803 and the Orleans Territory therefore became the state of Louisiana in 1812.
