How do business websites track their visitor numbers?

There are lots of programs out there that can be used to track visitor numbers.
The least reliable is to look at the server logs and try to interpret them yourself, this can be quite tricky to do however.
The best way is to use some easy package like google analytics which is free and you just put some code on your site and then it tells you lots of information about how people use and engage with your website.
