How do I prepare a space for a play structure

If you wish to prepare space then can you not simply chop down, cut and remove anything that is in the way?
If you are looking to remove turf then again unless a huge area often the best is simply to dig it up with a spade, do it slowly over a period of days and you can remove the top level of grass etc to get to the soil underneath as required.
