How do star sign dating predictions work?

Star sign dating predictions work by essentially making things up.
It might sound odd that this happens and people fall for it, but if you surround anything with a pseudo-science and make the process elaborate enough, people will start to buy into it.
Products, research books, sky and star charts etc make it all have a semblance of rationality, but semblance is where it ends! Take no notice to any of those things.
