How do teeth get stained? What are the different types of stains?

There are different types of stain.
But generally it is food stains that cause it, and often this is from liquids. For instance if you have lots of blackcurrant drinks then this can add a dark purple grey stain to the teeth.
But others are through repeated use of things like tobacco products that can stain the teeth a horrible yellow colour over time.

Teeth get stained in variety of ways such as food and beverages, especially tea, coffee, wine and also substances like tobacco. In the initial stages, they may be on the teeth enamel, but over a period of time they may become firmly etched on to the teeth. Stains on the tooth enamel are called extrinsic stains while those firmly etched on the teeth are called intrinsic stains.
