How do you increase surface area for a given volume?
Question asked by: mrquestion

The trick for increasing the surface area of something of a given volume is that adopted by... our bodies!
If you think of things like the small intestine that are very long but in a small volume, since our bodies aren't equally huge, then you can see that having something coiled or with a wavy surface is a good way to achieve this.
Also think of leaves on trees and how many leaves there are on a tree and the shape of them, in order to maximise the area available to collect light from the sun given the trees volume.
