How do you know whether something is bad for the environment or not?
Question asked by: mrquestion

There are several ways in which something can be bad for the environment.
One way is if it is something that can't be broken down easily so therefore it just sits in a landfill site for instance for millenia, for instance many plastics are like this because they are so inert they basically don't get broken down by natural processes.
A second thing can be those waste products that affect the environment, either by leaching into rivers and causing algal blooms for instance that can starve water of oxygen and kill wildlife or by releasing gases that go into the environment and have a negative effect perhaps by changing acidity and causing acid rain or by rising into the atmosphere and keeping heat in and raising the temperature.
