How does facebook make money?

The main way that it does this is through advertising.
So when you login for instance you will tend to see adverts appear on certain areas of the screen and sometimes these are targetted at your interests.
Then facebook gets paid for those adverts by the company that advertises on each occasion, though whether this is a flat rate cost per impression or if the charge comes when the ads are actually clicked on I'm not sure of.
