How does google find websites?

Question asked by: mrquestion

There are two ways that google finds website. The most simple way is through the fact that people who create a website can submit it to google for indexing, and in this case it gets added to a queue and will presumably get indexed at some stage if google thinks the site is ok.

The way that most sites are picked up these days is through a robot. This is a simple program that follows links across the web, and if that link leads to a new website then that site can be indexed.

This is the idea of connectedness at an extreme level, that any site that has a link to another site that in turn has links to more sites and so on could lead to ultimately the "first" website and so search engines by following links can visit literally billions of websites.
