How does lightning occur?
Question asked by: knowitall
Lightning occurs due to the build up of static charges within a cloud, or the cloud and the ground.
One will get a very negative charge and the other a very positive charge.
When this reaches a certain level, the electrical potential is enormous and a sudden discharge will occur as the one is attracted to the other.
This is like a giant battery forming temporarily and the energy discharged is immense. This is known as lightning. The air is formed so much that it expands rapidly - thunder.
