How similar to another show do you need to be to be in danger of copying it?

This is a moot point. And it is the sort of thing that lawyers and solicitors have a field day with these days taking in the fees from clients when one party tries to sue another.
There have been messy cases in the past such as the Simon Fuller vs Simon Cowell debate over the alleged emulation of the music reality TV format that Fuller has, though that was settled out of court.
With so many TV shows following the same sort of format these days I guess there must be a lot of shades of grey, and as there are similarities between so many shows I suppose it is the level of emulation that counts.
