I have read about a free photo test shoot. Do you think this is a con?

It is hard to say if this is a con without knowing more about it.
Some agencies do offer free photo shoots on the hope of finding a real 'gem' and then signing them up on their books.
If talented models turn up, then offering some free shots can be a cost effective form of advertising.
Always take someone with you when going to a shoot like this, and as soon as you are asked to hand over any money on the promise of work or to be signed up on the books, run away.
Also research the agency doing the shoot before hand to ensure they are genuine.
