I want to know what sort of paint I can use on my gas fire to spruce it up. It will get hot.

Use heat resistant or heat proof paint, to do this look at the tins that the paint comes in. Most of these have tick lists next to them showing what they can be used for: if it has a tick next to it saying that it can be used for radiators then you know that one is ok.
