If 3* = 81, then what is the value of * ?

What is the quickest way to work this type of question out?

The answer is that you divide 81 by 3 in order to get 27.

To find the value of * in 3*=81 need to know the power in which 3 would be raised to give 81. The number is 4, therefore: 3*=81; 3*=3^4, canceling out three from both sides we have *=4.
