If there are no moral absolutes then what do we do when engaging in moral debate?

Question asked by: mrquestion

If there are no moral absolutes, meaning absolute rights and wrongs like those given by God, then what are we doing when talking morally.

This is actually quite an interesting question, because we always talk as though there are absolutes when trying to persuade people to our point of view.

If the absolutes don't exist then maybe it is a necessary illusion that we act as though there are in order to ensure social cohesion and a workable society. However, we can also be moral without absolutes by having morals relative to a particular society or group of people just so long as enough people agree to live by those rules that have been created by the majority in the form of the laws of the land.
