This depends on you, your emotions and how hurt you would be if you found out the truth.
If he refers to you as friends all the time then it could be that he is hinting that is what you are and nothing more.
If you ask him out and he says no it will ruin a great friendship unless you could live with that.
Therefore best to concentrate on the friendship and forget about the romance and look for love interests outside of the friendship. Good luck!
