Is it worth submitting a site to directories?

Most people think that directories on the web have had their day apart from a few that are known to be good quality and perhaps still used or referenced by search engines.
The fact is that there are literally millions of directory websites out there, so working out which is a good one and which is worth it is pretty hard these days.
Therefore target those directories that you both know to be of good quality and also that are related to your website as those of the same sort of topic or category are thought to be preferred to those that are completely irrelevant or generic.
