Is man the highest fruit of the universe or is he just an insignificant speck in infinite space-or something in between?

Something in between, depending on belief.
For some people and sometimes those of a particular religious system then man is made in the image of God - this makes him the ultimate end product of evolution.
Also for those tht see life as a miracle and us sitting at the top of the pyramid of life (whether religious or not) would also have humanity as the pinnacle of everything.
However for most scientists and those that think the universe is possibly infinite and time might be too and there are huge numbers of civilisations out there somewhere, then we become much more insignificant when you 'zoom out'. Ultimately it is up to you how you think we are to be perceived because it is a subjective question.
