The determinant is a key term you need to understand when you are studying matrix, plural matrices, in mathematics or possibly physics.
It performs a linear transformation on a matrix, for instance it might double its size for instance.
For more information on the basic properties of determinants then you could look at a maths resource or something like this page on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Determinant#Basic_properties
