Rift areas, main stress faults and basin and range

At a Continental rift area, what kind of main stress exists, what type of fault system you usually see in the area and What caused the basin and range structure?
Question asked by: Baltazar

Asked on: 09 Dec 2009

There are stresses caused by the heat in the earth's crust where the two sections of the plate interact with each other.

This can cause bumps and pressure and hot gases and so on can be released along these fault lines.

Plate tectonics and the earths crust is a relatively new science but a lot has been learnt about it in the last 50 years or so.
