Should you smile in photos?

It depends on what you are trying to achieve.
If it is a mood shot then obviously not smiling is what is required. For a standard portrait shot or family photograph then it does make sense to smile otherwise you will look grumpy and if everyone else is smiling and you are not then it could look a little odd!
