what was a sophist in ancient greek society and what particular function did this class of people perform; what purpose did they serve?

The sophist was someone who was supposedly wise, and made a living out of being wise, and talking to people and educating them about various matters.

They were in a sense a type of teacher and many got paid for teaching and debating. They impressed people with their words.

Some tried to genuinely educate others and therefore served an important purpose, others are portrayed as just being a little pompous and perhaps pretending to know more than they actually did!
