what are the connections between the attempts to develop sustaninable systems and quantity and quality of enviromental data?

Well, there is a tight link.

If the data is misleading or incorrect then the conclusions drawn from that data will be incorrect and therefore not model the real world situation.

These means that the best solution is not in place where the right data would lead to a better solution being able to be put in place.
