Two numbers multiply together to make 8, but add together to make -6 what are the two numbers?

Question asked by: knowitall

The answer is -4 and -2.

Use the fact that negative numbers add to a negative, but multiply to give a positive number to work out the answer to a question like this.

Try a few possibilities: for instance -3 and -3 add to -6 but multiply to give 9, therefore -2 and -4 is the answer as other candidates like -5 and -1 do not fit the job.
