What are competency based interview questions?
Question asked by: knowitall

Competency based interviews are those that test you and your competencies!
What this means is that they try to explore the skills that you have rather than ask generic questions about you and your experience.
They usually work through asking for examples of times when you have displayed different skills in your working career.
These skills could be for instance leadership, coping with change, dealing with conflict, working to tight deadlines, managing a difficult task and much more besides.
They are a favourite of HR but the problem is to use them well and assess the answer well the HR person needs a lot of experience and training which sadly is often not the case and therefore the competency interview can backfire on the employer.
