What causes the eruption of pyroclasts and what type of lava are they associated with?

Certain types of explosions from volcanoes are what cause this sort of disaster, the pyroclastic flow.

They can move really quickly and be caused by things such as fountain collapse, gravitational collapse of a lava flow and more besides.
