What did european states hope to gain from the various wars of the 18th century?

Wars were generally supposed to lead to a country having more power and a greater global standing.
If you conquer another people and can lay claim to its knowledge, people and resources then you have very powerful commodities.
Most countries were empire building at the time and therefore trying to gain dominion over as much of the planet as they possibly could, due to their advanced nature it was mainly European countries that were doing this as the rest of the world was a long way behind.
