What do the stripes on the american flag represent?

The American flag has a total of 13 stripes on it together with the 50 stars.
These represent the original thirteen colonies, these were the ones that rebelled initially against the Brits and then became the starting thirteen states.
So they are a historical significance of what happened in the past in the history of the USA.
