What does a consultant actually do?

What does a consultant do? Well, it depends.
Some consultants do very little. The problem is that this is such a general word that it covers a multitude of sins.
Generally in a business setting a consultant is someone who is hired in because they have specialist skills that the company needs that helps them to address a problem.
For instance if a company wants to know how it should manage its advertising but has little in house experience it could hire a marketing consultant to help work out their strategy, budget and so on for their advertising.
