What does it mean when a guy you've been dating for a while says he loves you but is not in love with you?

Ah, the classic question!

This means that he wants to split up with you but is trying to be a bit delicate and sensitive about how he tells you the message.

It means that he loves you as a friend (he loves you) but he doesn't love you in the sense of wanting to go out with you (he's not in love with you).

Therefore the relationship is coming to an end, so end it gracefully and move onto pastures new.
