What does mean and median mean?
Question asked by: MellyR

Mean and median are two of the different types of average that exist.
Mean is the one that we usually refer to as just the average in non-mathematical speak.
It's what you get when you add everything together and divide by the number of items. So we all know the mean of 1,2,3 is 2, but why is this? Because 1+2+3 = 6 and there are three items, so 6 / 3 = 2.
The median is the one in the middle, so in this case the median is 2 also. In this sequence: 1,2,3,2,7 the median is 3.
