What does pH paper test for?

Question asked by: mrquestion

Asked on: 04 Jan 2010

PH paper is used to test not just for an acid or alkali but also the strength.

Unlike something like litmus paper which basically only goes red or blue, with pH paper there is a whole scale of different colours that can indicate quite accurately the pH or strength of the acid.

Therefore pH paper is used a lot in chemistry to determine how strong or weak an acid or alkali is or indeed if it is neutral, which is indicated by something that has a pH of 7 - for instance dip pH paper which is usually a yellowy colour by default into water and you will see it turn green to indicate a neutral pH.
