What does species mean?

To find out what a term means in general, a good starting point should be the dictionary.
I just looked this one up in mine and found this definition for speices, from the biological point of view:
"A single, distinct class of living creature with features that distinguish it from others"
It's interesting that concepts that we inherently understand are often the hardest to define precisely.
