What does supernova mean?
Question asked by: knowitall
Supernova: this is a dramatic cosmic event, and it is as well to know what it means. Why?
Because our lives are defined by the activity of supernova in that we are all composed of stardust - many of the heavy elements in the galaxy were produced through supernova, like those inside us and in our planetary core.
To cause a supernova a star must be massive - literally - in fact around eight times more massive than the sun.
When it collapses under its own gravity an explosion may occur, and the extreme heat and pressure causes heavy elements to form.
