What does the word vogue mean in fashion?

Vogue can literally mean in fashion, so something that is in fashion is said to be in vogue. It looks like it is probably a French word or has its origins in that language.

Also there is a fashion magazine called Vogue so if people mention that they saw something in vogue etc then they are presumably referring to that fashion magazine rather than the general meaning of the word.
