What is a hung parliament?
Question asked by: artiste
Asked on: 13 Jan 2010
A hung parliament refers to the state of play after a general election in the UK whereby no party has a majority.
This means that there is no automatic party that goes into power, and so it is literally hung, as in hung in the balance.
In these circumstances usually one smaller party groups together with a larger party although there hasn't been a hung parliament for a long time.
