What is a link word puzzle?

A link word puzzle refers to a puzzle in which you are given a series of words and you must work out what the common connecting word is.
Sometimes there could be more than one solution but generally there is just one word.
So for instance if you had a list like this:
GOLD, IRON, BLACK
and were asked what the connecting word is, then the answer would be SMITH, to form goldsmith, ironsmith and blacksmith.
